Let’s see what your inner voice is for a moment. It’s that little voice that (when you start writing a song) tells you that

‘You do not have time’
‘There is nothing to write about’
‘You have nothing to say’

Sounds familiar? The list of humiliations of the inner voice is as endless as your imagination.

I believe that anything that is negative or detrimental to your writing is your inner voice that sounds inside your head. This is what I think writers block is. It’s just your inner voice winning the battle you have with it Every day.

As composers, we must be open to new ideas, thoughts, feelings, experiences, and observations. This requires ensuring that there is a flow of words from the brain to the paper. If we are losing the battle with our inner voice, then the valve of the idea is closed by our own negativity and we simply dry ourselves out.

Hence the writers block.

Composers stop writing not for their reasons. It is because they have let your inner voice make you believe that these reasons are the truth.

The best way to cure writers block is to actually write.

Here’s my first songwriting tip: start a journal and write in it every day.

It doesn’t matter what you write about, just write. Pay attention to what your inner voice is saying. You can say things like

‘What the hell are you doing?’
‘You will never go on like this’
‘What you just wrote there is @ #!% & (Put whatever expletive you see fit)’.

Remember, no matter what you type, it is how well you ignore your inner voice.

Pretty soon don’t worry about what is good or bad, you will just love writing and that is a feeling of total liberation that we as songwriters are really looking for.
