Manoj was a teacher in a small town in Mumbai. Despite his meager income, he educated his son Ram, who was up to the task by doing extremely well in his studies. Aiming for the highest grade in Computer Science, Ram ranked first in school, followed by a top 10 rank in the Indian Institute of Technology entrance exam.
Yearning for recognition, after completing B.Tech with top honors, Ram received an offer from a leading US university to do his master’s degree on a full scholarship and sought his father’s consent. Considering the tremendous opportunities he provided, Manoj reluctantly agreed to send him abroad.
Finishing his Masters in Computer Science, Ram got a job as a research executive at a software company. He wrote about this offer to his father. His parents looked forward to spending the last years of his life with his child in Mumbai and were pained by the thought of further delay. However, the news that Ram would be coming to Mumbai for Diwal (a popular Indian festival) a fortnight later, he offered some consolation to the elderly couple.
Under this pretext, Manoj wanted to marry off his son during the visit so that Ram could take his wife with him to America. Manoj’s friend Rakesh met him at the market and informed him that he was looking for a suitable child for his daughter Shreya, who had finished her medical degree. Manoj shared the information about his son with Rakesh, who was eager to marry his daughter to Ram.
On his return from the market, Manoj informed his wife about the offer and said that he had invited Rakesh and his daughter to come home for Diwali, when they too can meet Ram. Ram arrived from the US and was told about the proposal to marry Shreya.
However, her mother was not happy because Ram would go with Shreya to the US after the marriage. Shreya and her father spent Diwali with the Manoj and Ram gave her consent to marry Shreya.
To complete various paperwork that remained to be done, Ram was running. He had to tie up some loose ends for his work. He came back one night yelling, “Mom, I’ve made all the arrangements for work and we just have to take care of the marriage.”
Reacting slowly, her mother asked her when she planned to go to the US with Shreya. Ram winked at her and asked, “Mom, do you feel like you’ve had enough and want me to leave soon!!” Ram quickly apologized to her, “Mom, I was just kidding, I don’t know how much you love me?”
However, she was not consoled. She then made her parents sit comfortably and she began to say. “Mom, I’m not going anywhere leaving you and dad behind. Technology has improved so much that location is no longer a constraint for business. I’ve arranged to work from Mumbai and ship software abroad.” Her mom jumped with Joy and hugged Ram and Shreya.
