I had a little meeting the other day and noticed that most of my guests were congregating in my kitchen. There was a time when the kitchen was the place where food was prepared, cooked and stored. In fact, my grandmother remembers those days.

The kitchen has now become a multifaceted room. It’s probably the place where the family spends the most time. Mom may be cooking or cleaning, while Dad is on the kitchen counter paying the bills, while the kids do their homework. With this in mind, it is important to start taking more care in kitchen design. Increasingly, it must be functional and pleasing to the eye. We spend a lot of time there after all.

Here are some things to consider when designing your kitchen:

The Floor Plan: Consider opening your kitchen to another room in your family, such as the living room or dining room. What it does is give you a great free-flowing open space. Not only will it make your kitchen look bigger, but it will also give you the chance to hang out with lots of friends and family.

The flooring material – Consider the type of flooring you will be using in your kitchen. If you live in a cold part of the country, you may want to use heated kitchen floors, especially if you will be spending a lot of time in the kitchen. If you want to make a statement, you can use decorative and elegant tiles that will stand out.

The cabinets: First, decide how much storage space you will need. Leave room for more cabinet space than you think you will need. Most of the time we always underestimate and then we run out of space. The next thing to consider is the color and material of the cabinet that contributes to the overall appearance. Many designers suggest that you should choose a neutral cabinet color to match most colored walls. This way, even if the wall colors are slightly off, they won’t collide with the cabinets. Material wise, while wood is the most common choice, stainless steel cabinets are gaining popularity these days as well.

Sinks and Faucets: Your kitchen sinks and faucets can add great appeal. There are so many different brands and styles that there is sure to be one that you will like. Think of any sink and faucet accessory you want, such as a soap dispenser, removable spray, water filter, or hot water dispenser. Makes it easy to choose an all-in-one so they are all installed in one place.

No matter what you choose, always be budget conscious. There are many options regardless of the size of your wallet.
