The Mediterranean Sea is the most polluted sea in the world, the Spanish newspaper “El País” wrote on Monday, referring to the main scientists and organizations that defend nature.

“The waters of the Mediterranean Sea are contaminated with petrochemicals and other waters, especially in the area near the huge port cities. It becomes dangerous for human health” – quotes a powerful Spanish periodical.

According to the international organization Greenpeace and the Spanish World Ocean Research Institute, each cubic meter of water in the Mediterranean contains 33 different types of waist. But each liter contains 10 grams of petrochemicals.

Every year, more than 400 tons of petrochemical products, intentionally or accidentally, are dumped into the waters of the Mediterranean Sea; every kilometer of the ocean floor is covered with 1900 objects that are human activity waists, – it is noted in the article.

Plastic belts, with a very high concentration on the coast, pose a special risk to Mediterranean flora and fauna. The most polluted coastal region in Spain is considered Barcelona with its surrounding regions (the northeast) and Alhesiras (the south of the country).

And it is not only due to the fact that every year 12 thousand ships (20% of which are oil tankers) ply the Mediterranean Sea, the main reason is the emissions of waste from the coasts.

150 million people inhabit the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Another 200 million each summer come to rest here. In many countries, sewer belts are emitted into the sea. Pollution also occurs by rivers that fall into the sea, reports “El País”.

Environmentalists have no doubt that fish and other shellfish from the Mediterranean Sea are also contaminated. On the other hand, some species of inhabitants of the sea, especially tuna and grass fish, concentrate in their bodies mercury, a product of the pollution of the Mediterranean Sea, very poisonous to humans.
