Imagine what would happen if your favorite dress or pants did not have a zipper. You would be struggling, literally pulling and pulling on the fabric to make it fit your body. You will most likely never succeed. If you do manage to use it, it will rip and tear in several places. Zippers are really useful, but there are cases when they cause you problems: when they break. Since it’s embarrassing to get caught with an open and broken zipper, here’s how to properly repair a zipper.

materials needed

* Pliers (a small pair of needle nose is your best bet)
* Scissors
* Needle
* Strong thread (thicker type used for button sewing is better)

Process

1. Using the pliers, carefully pry up the metal stop on the zipper. This is the little band at the bottom, which works by stopping the slider when you try to open the zipper. You may find it a bit difficult, but if you put your strength into it, you’ll do just fine. If you can’t find pliers, a dull kitchen knife or screwdriver might do the trick. But be careful!

2. Once the metal stop is removed, move the slider down towards the bottom of the zipper, just below the teeth at the very bottom. Don’t pull it out completely.

3. You should now realign the zipper teeth, making them fit smoothly. Use your fingers and position the teeth so that one side is not all bunched up. Straighten teeth correctly.

4. Start zipping up, almost halfway, paying close attention to whether the teeth are engaging correctly. Carry out this procedure carefully, until you are sure the zipper runs straight again.

5. Get the needle and strong thread. Using these, sew around the area where the old metal stop was located. Your goal is to replace the stopper with just the thread. Continue sewing and tightly rolling the bottom of the zipper. At least six or seven points will do. If necessary, add more additional stitches. When you are sure it is secure, tie a knot in the back of the zipper and cut off the excess thread.

6. Pull the zipper up, all the way, until it reaches the top. If you do it correctly, the zipper will no longer snag.

7. If the zipper becomes misaligned again, you can simply remove the seams with a seam ripper and repeat the entire process.

A broken zipper can ruin a perfectly good outfit. Solve this unpleasant dilemma immediately through this simple procedure. This can work on any type of zipper, be it clothing, bags, and even furniture covers. Doing this is much better than having to completely replace the entire zipper.
