You may be like many people who have often complained about the terrible state of movies now, and in some cases your attitude is possibly valid. On the other hand, we’re experiencing a fairly diverse amount of unique movie making right now and it’s really hard to just say, “It’s all just bad.” In fact, it can probably be argued that the movies coming out now are some of the most refreshing movies to come out in a long time.
That’s a bold claim, especially when you consider some of the periods of the so-called “golden age” that cinema has had over the last century. A quick look at the usual “best of all time” lists has top ten entries that were made before 1950. Still, with so many diverse filmmakers behind the camera today, using tremendous technology and working with powerful scripts, movies today are something special.
However, in all honesty, it’s important to note that when it comes to watching a movie, you want to have a good time. Movies are supposed to be entertaining. They don’t all have to be high-end filmmakers and they don’t have to be a candidate for the “GOAT” lists. You want to walk out of the theater absolutely thrilled by a cool CGI sequence you saw or maybe you’re fired up by a choreographed fight sequence that broke the laws of physics. Maybe you can’t stop laughing at the best pound-for-pound jokes you’ve ever heard.
It’s important to walk out of a movie theater with a smile on your face, and if that’s what this is all about, here are three movies that are sure to get the job done:
Soul of the party – A stay-at-home career wife has everything she has ever known crumbling around her, and now she has to decide what the next part of her life will entail. How about college? It’s a fun journey through what can often be difficult material to cover in a movie, but again, don’t we all get through life’s tough situations with a bit of humor, too?
The water – Approximately 30 years after the original, the new version of this film reverses the roles a bit and addresses a few more issues in addition to the differences between rich and poor. A diverse cast and a willingness to touch the heartstrings make this revamped version a good movie.
Deadpool 2 – Our foul-mouthed hero is back for a second adventure that sees the formation of X-Force and a mission bigger than him. With plenty of inside jokes and a tongue-in-cheek way to break the fourth wall without breaking it, this is the kind of sequel you dream of.
Movies that are released now are sure to have high entertainment value. Smiles aside, remember that going to the movies is supposed to be a way of leaving the world for a little while. Filmmakers rely on the idea of suspension of disbelief. In other words, you must put aside the idea that what you are seeing is fictional and not real. If you can do that and be carried away by a universe where what you are seeing is very real, you may need a lever to get the smile off your face when you leave the theater.
